Percy Sledge was an American R&B and soul singer who gained fame with his hit song "When a Man Loves a Woman" in 1966. Born on November 25, 1940, in Leighton, Alabama, Sledge started his music career in his church choir before moving on to perform in local clubs. He signed with the record label Atlantic Records and released his debut single, "When a Man Loves a Woman," which became a massive success, reaching the top of the charts in both the US and the UK.
Sledge continued to have a successful music career throughout the 1960s and 1970s, releasing several more hit songs like "Warm and Tender Love" and "Take Time to Know Her." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Percy Sledge passed away on April 14, 2015, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest soul singers of his time.
