Ray Barretto was a renowned American percussionist and bandleader, considered one of the most important figures in Latin jazz. He was born on April 29, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, to Puerto Rican parents. Barretto began his career as a professional musician in the 1940s, playing with various jazz and Latin bands in New York City. He gained fame for his skillful playing on the conga drums and other percussion instruments.


In the 1960s and 1970s, Ray Barretto became a prominent figure in the Latin jazz scene, blending traditional Cuban rhythms with elements of jazz and soul music. He released numerous albums during his career, including the critically acclaimed "Acid" in 1968. Barretto was also known for his work as a bandleader, leading groups such as the Ray Barretto Orchestra and the New World Spirit. He passed away on February 17, 2006, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a pioneer in Latin jazz music.
