Ray Charles, born Ray Charles Robinson on September 23, 1930, in Albany, Georgia, was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. He is considered one of the pioneers of soul music and is known for his unique blend of rhythm and blues, gospel, and jazz. Charles overcame a challenging childhood, including losing his sight at the age of seven, to become a highly influential and successful musician. He signed with Atlantic Records in 1952 and went on to release numerous hit songs, including "What'd I Say," "Georgia on My Mind," and "Hit the Road Jack."


Ray Charles received multiple Grammy Awards throughout his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He also received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in 1986 and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1993. Charles passed away on June 10, 2004, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.
