R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. Known for their jangly guitar sound, introspective lyrics, and Stipe's distinctive vocals, R.E.M. is considered one of the pioneers of alternative rock.
R.E.M. achieved commercial success with hits like "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "Man on the Moon." The band released 15 studio albums, with their most successful being "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People." R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 before announcing their disbandment in 2011. Throughout their career, R.E.M. received critical acclaim, won multiple Grammy Awards, and left a lasting impact on the alternative music scene.
