R.E.M. is an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980. The band consists of members Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass), and Bill Berry (drums, retired in 1997). R.E.M. is known for their alternative rock sound and poetic lyrics, with hits such as "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "Man on the Moon." They were pioneers of the alternative rock genre in the 1980s and 1990s, earning critical acclaim and commercial success.


R.E.M. has released 15 studio albums, with their most successful being "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People." The band has won three Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. R.E.M. announced their breakup in 2011 after over three decades of making music together. Despite their disbandment, R.E.M. remains a significant influence on the alternative rock music scene.
