R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. The band consisted of lead vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. They were pioneers of the alternative rock genre and were known for their melodic tunes, thought-provoking lyrics, and unique sound that blended jangle pop, folk rock, and post-punk elements.
R.E.M. achieved commercial success and critical acclaim with albums such as "Out of Time," "Automatic for the People," and "Monster." They had numerous hit singles like "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "Man on the Moon." The band won three Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. R.E.M. disbanded in 2011 after releasing 15 studio albums and influencing a generation of musicians with their innovative music.
