R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980. The band consisted of vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry (who later left the band in 1997). R.E.M. was known for their alternative rock sound and thought-provoking lyrics, which often tackled political and social issues.


R.E.M. achieved mainstream success in the 1980s and 1990s with albums like "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People," which featured hits such as "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts." The band was highly influential in the development of alternative rock and won multiple Grammy Awards during their career. R.E.M. disbanded in 2011 after over three decades of making music, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important and successful rock bands of their time.
