R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. The band's original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. R.E.M. is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the alternative rock genre, gaining mainstream success in the 1980s and 1990s with hits like "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "Man on the Moon."
Throughout their career, R.E.M. released 15 studio albums, with their most successful being "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People." The band received critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards. In 2011, R.E.M. announced their disbandment, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the music industry.
