R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia. The band consisted of members Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass), and Bill Berry (drums). R.E.M. is known for their alternative rock sound and poetic lyrics, which often touched on political and social issues. They gained mainstream success with their 1987 album "Document" and became one of the pioneers of the alternative rock genre in the 1980s and 1990s.
Throughout their career, R.E.M. released critically acclaimed albums such as "Automatic for the People" and "Out of Time," which included hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts." The band achieved commercial success and won multiple Grammy Awards.
