R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. The band's original lineup consisted of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. R.E.M. was known for their unique sound, which blended elements of alternative rock, jangle pop, and folk rock. They achieved commercial success and critical acclaim with albums like "Automatic for the People" and "Out of Time."
R.E.M. is considered one of the pioneers of the alternative rock genre and is often credited with helping to popularize the genre in the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout their career, the band released a total of 15 studio albums and won three Grammy Awards.
