Richie Havens was an American folk singer and guitarist known for his soulful voice and unique style of guitar playing. He was born on January 21, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, and passed away on April 22, 2013. Havens gained widespread recognition for his performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, where he opened the festival and famously improvised the song "Freedom" based on the spiritual "Motherless Child."


Throughout his career, Havens released over 25 albums and collaborated with artists such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles. He was known for his socially conscious lyrics and was a prominent figure in the folk music scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Havens continued to tour and perform until shortly before his death, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering folk artist and a symbol of the counterculture movement of his era.
