Derringer first gained prominence as a member of the McCoys, best known for their hit single "Hang On Sloopy" in 1965. He later formed the band Derringer and also played with the Edgar Winter Group, contributing to their hit songs "Free Ride" and "Frankenstein."
In addition to his work as a solo artist, Derringer has collaborated with artists such as Alice Cooper, Steely Dan, and Kiss. He is known for his virtuosic guitar playing and has been praised for his skills in both rock and blues genres.
