James was a pioneer of the punk-funk genre and was known for his flamboyant style, wild personality, and energetic performances.
In addition to his successful solo career, Rick James also collaborated with other artists, including Neil Young and Prince. He won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for his work on the song "U Can't Touch This" with MC Hammer. James struggled with drug addiction throughout his life, which ultimately led to legal troubles and time in prison.
