Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, a notable early proponent of religious freedom, and the founder of the colony of Rhode Island in America. Williams was a Puritan minister who arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631. He advocated for the separation of church and state, and believed in the idea of a "wall of separation" between the two. Due to his controversial beliefs, Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636.
In 1636, Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island, which became a safe haven for those seeking religious freedom. He established a government based on the principles of liberty and religious tolerance, allowing individuals to practice their faith without interference. Williams' advocacy for religious freedom and his role in establishing Rhode Island as a haven for religious minorities have cemented his legacy as an important figure in American history.
