Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, author, and founder of the colony of Rhode Island. He was a proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state, advocating for the idea of a "wall of separation" between the two. Williams believed in fair treatment of Native Americans and was known for his efforts to establish peaceful relations with them. He also believed in the fair treatment of all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs.
In 1636, Williams established Providence Plantations, which later became the colony of Rhode Island. He obtained a royal charter for the colony in 1663, which granted religious freedom and established a government based on the consent of the governed. Williams' ideas on religious freedom and individual rights had a significant influence on the development of American democracy and the concept of religious liberty.
