Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, religious and political thinker, and the founder of the colony of Rhode Island. He is best known for his advocacy of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Williams was a Puritan minister who believed in the freedom of conscience and the idea that the state should not interfere in matters of religion. He was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636 for his controversial views and went on to establish the settlement of Providence, which later became part of Rhode Island.
Williams was a prolific writer and his most famous work is "The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution" (1644), in which he argued for religious freedom and criticized the Puritans for their intolerance. He also had a significant influence on the development of American political thought, particularly in the areas of religious liberty and the separation of church and state.
