Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, political theorist, and founder of the colony of Rhode Island. He is best known for his advocacy of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Williams believed in the freedom of conscience and the idea that individuals should be free to practice any religion without interference from the government. He was a staunch supporter of the rights of Native Americans and believed in fair treatment and just compensation for their land.
In 1636, Williams established the settlement of Providence in present-day Rhode Island as a refuge for those seeking religious freedom. He also played a key role in the creation of the first Baptist church in America. Williams' writings and ideas had a significant influence on the development of religious freedom and the separation of church and state in the United States.
