Artist Bio:
Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, author, and founder of the colony of Rhode Island. He is best known for his advocacy of religious freedom, separation of church and state, and the principle of liberty of conscience. Williams believed that the government should not interfere in matters of religion and that individuals should be free to worship as they choose without fear of persecution.

In 1636, Williams established the settlement of Providence in present-day Rhode Island as a haven for religious minorities. He also founded the first Baptist church in America and was a prolific writer on topics related to religious freedom and individual rights. Williams' ideas and writings had a significant influence on the development of the principles of religious liberty and freedom of conscience in the United States.
