Artist Bio:
Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English Puritan minister, theologian, and founder of the colony of Rhode Island. He is best known for advocating for the separation of church and state, as well as promoting religious freedom and tolerance. Williams believed in the idea of a "wall of separation" between the church and the state, a concept that would later influence the drafting of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

In 1636, Williams established the settlement of Providence, which later became the capital of Rhode Island. He was a proponent of fair treatment of Native Americans and was known for his efforts to purchase land from them rather than taking it by force. Williams also wrote several books on theology and philosophy, including "The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution for Cause of Conscience" and "The Key into the Languages of America." His ideas and principles continue to influence discussions on religious freedom and the separation of church and state in the United States.
