Artist Bio:
Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, advocate for the separation of church and state, and founder of the colony of Rhode Island. He was born in London and trained as a minister in the Church of England before becoming a Puritan. Williams believed in religious freedom and the idea that the government should not interfere with an individual's conscience. This belief led him to flee to the American colonies in 1631 to escape religious persecution.

In 1636, Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island, which became a haven for religious minorities and a model of religious tolerance. Williams was also known for his interactions with Native American tribes, advocating for fair treatment and respectful relations. His ideas on religious freedom and separation of church and state were influential in the development of American political thought and the concept of religious liberty in the United States.
