Artist Bio:
Roger Williams (1603-1683) was an English theologian, religious and political thinker, and the founder of the colony of Rhode Island in America. He is best known for advocating the principle of separation of church and state and for his belief in religious freedom. Williams was a Puritan minister who was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636 due to his controversial beliefs, including his criticism of the colonists' treatment of Native Americans and his rejection of the idea that civil authorities had the right to punish religious dissension.

After being expelled, Williams established Providence Plantations, which later became the colony of Rhode Island, as a haven for religious minorities and a place where individuals could worship freely without interference from the government. He also played a significant role in the development of the concept of freedom of conscience and religious liberty in America. Williams' ideas on religious freedom and the separation of church and state had a lasting impact on the development of the United States as a nation founded on the principles of individual liberty and religious tolerance.
