Hamilton began his career singing in church choirs before gaining popularity in the 1950s as a solo artist.

Hamilton signed with Epic Records in 1954 and released several successful singles, including "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Unchained Melody." He was one of the first artists to bring gospel influences into popular music. Hamilton's career was cut short tragically when he suffered a stroke in 1969, which left him partially paralyzed.
