Thomas began his career in music in the 1940s and became a pioneering figure in the development of the Memphis soul and funk scene. He was known for his energetic stage presence and his humorous lyrics.
Thomas had several hit songs during his career, including "Walking the Dog" and "Do the Funky Chicken," which both became dance craze hits. He was also a radio DJ and a prominent figure in the Memphis music scene, influencing many artists who followed in his footsteps. In 1992, Rufus Thomas was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame for his contributions to the genre.
