Artist Bio:
Rufus Thomas was an American rhythm and blues and soul singer, songwriter, and dancer. He was born on March 26, 1917, in Cayce, Mississippi, and passed away on December 15, 2001, in Memphis, Tennessee. Thomas began his music career in the 1940s as a radio DJ and later became known for his energetic stage performances and catchy dance moves.


Thomas gained fame in the 1960s with hits such as "Walking the Dog" and "Do the Funky Chicken," which helped solidify his reputation as a pioneer of the Memphis soul sound. He was also known for his collaborations with his daughter, Carla Thomas, who was also a successful R&B singer. Rufus Thomas was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2014, recognizing his contributions to the city's rich musical heritage.
