Salt-N-Pepa is an American hip hop group formed in 1985 in Queens, New York. The group consists of Cheryl James ("Salt"), Sandra Denton ("Pepa"), and Deidra Roper ("DJ Spinderella"). They are considered one of the first all-female rap groups and are known for their empowering lyrics and pioneering the fusion of hip hop and pop music. Salt-N-Pepa gained mainstream success in the late 1980s and early 1990s with hit songs like "Push It," "Shoop," and "Whatta Man."
The group has won several awards, including a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995. They were also the first female rap act to earn a platinum album, with their 1986 release "Hot, Cool & Vicious." Salt-N-Pepa have been influential in breaking down barriers for women in hip hop and continue to inspire artists in the genre.
