Artist Bio:
Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur, born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is often referred to as the "King of Soul" for his distinctive vocals and contributions to the soul and R&B genres. Cooke began his music career as a member of the gospel group The Soul Stirrers before transitioning to a successful solo career in the late 1950s. He is known for hits such as "You Send Me," "A Change Is Gonna Come," and "Cupid."

In addition to his musical talents, Cooke was a trailblazer in the music industry as one of the first African-American artists to have ownership and control over his own record label and publishing rights. His influence on soul music and civil rights activism continues to be celebrated, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Tragically, Cooke's life was cut short when he was fatally shot at the age of 33 on December 11, 1964, under disputed circumstances.
