Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who is often referred to as the "King of Soul." Born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Cooke began his musical career as a gospel singer with the renowned group The Soul Stirrers. He later transitioned to secular music and achieved great success as a solo artist in the 1950s and 1960s.
Cooke is best known for his smooth and soulful voice, as well as hit songs such as "You Send Me," "A Change is Gonna Come," and "Cupid." In addition to his musical talents, Cooke was also a trailblazer in the music industry, becoming one of the first African-American artists to have ownership and control over his own record label. Tragically, Cooke's life was cut short when he was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33. Despite his untimely death, Sam Cooke's music continues to be celebrated and influential in the world of soul and R&B music.
