Artist Bio

Artist Bio:
Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who was born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is often referred to as the "King of Soul" for his distinctive and influential vocal style. Cooke began his music career as a member of the gospel group The Soul Stirrers before transitioning to a successful solo career in the 1950s. He is best known for hits such as "You Send Me," "A Change Is Gonna Come," and "Cupid."

In addition to his music career, Sam Cooke was also a trailblazer in the music industry as one of the first African-American artists to have ownership and control over his own record label. He founded his own record label, SAR Records, and publishing company to have more creative control over his music and to support other aspiring artists. Cooke's contributions to soul music and his impact on the civil rights movement have solidified his legacy as one of the greatest musicians of his time. Cooke tragically passed away on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33.
