Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who is often referred to as the "King of Soul." He was born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and started his music career as a member of the gospel group The Soul Stirrers. Cooke's smooth and soulful voice made him a pioneer in the soul and R&B genres, and he is best known for hits such as "A Change Is Gonna Come," "You Send Me," and "Cupid."
In addition to his successful music career, Cooke was also a trailblazer in the music industry as one of the first African American artists to have ownership and control over his own record label. Tragically, Sam Cooke's life was cut short when he was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances at the age of 33 on December 11, 1964. Despite his untimely death, Cooke's influence on soul music and his legacy as a groundbreaking artist continue to be celebrated to this day.
