Artist Bio:
Sam Cooke was an influential American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who is often referred to as the "King of Soul." He was born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and began his music career as a member of the gospel group the Soul Stirrers. Cooke later transitioned to secular music and had numerous hits in the 1950s and 1960s, including "You Send Me," "A Change Is Gonna Come," and "Twistin' the Night Away."
In addition to his successful music career, Sam Cooke was also a pioneer in the music industry as one of the first African-American artists to establish his own record label, SAR Records. Cooke's smooth and soulful voice, along with his socially conscious lyrics, had a lasting impact on the music industry and inspired many future generations of musicians. Tragically, Cooke's life was cut short when he was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33.
