Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who was born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is considered one of the pioneers of soul music and had a significant impact on the development of the genre during the 1950s and 1960s. Cooke began his musical career as a member of the gospel group the Soul Stirrers before transitioning to secular music and achieving commercial success as a solo artist.
Cooke's distinctive voice and smooth vocal style helped him produce numerous hit songs, including "You Send Me," "Cupid," and "A Change Is Gonna Come." He was also known for his activism in the civil rights movement, using his platform to advocate for racial equality and social justice. Tragically, Sam Cooke's life was cut short when he was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33.
