Sarah Vaughan was an American jazz singer known for her rich voice and impressive vocal range. She was born on March 27, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, and began singing in church at a young age. Vaughan rose to fame in the 1940s and 1950s, becoming one of the most beloved and influential jazz vocalists of her time. She was known for her ability to improvise and scat sing, as well as her emotional delivery of ballads.
Throughout her career, Vaughan recorded numerous albums and performed with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillespie. She won four Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989. Vaughan's most famous recordings include "Misty," "Lullaby of Birdland," and "Send in the Clowns." She passed away on April 3, 1990, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time.
