The group was formed in Washington, D.C. in 1991 and originally consisted of members Marc Gay, Carl Martin, Darnell Van Rensalier, and Garfield A. Bright. Shai is best known for their hit single "If I Ever Fall in Love," which was released in 1992 and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The group's debut album, also titled "If I Ever Fall in Love," was released in 1992 and was certified platinum. Shai continued to release music throughout the 1990s, with their most recent album, "Back From the Mystery System," released in 2007.
