He was best known for his hit novelty song "The Purple People Eater," which topped the charts in 1958. Wooley also had a successful acting career, appearing in over 60 films and numerous television shows. He is perhaps most recognized for his role as Pete Nolan in the popular television Western series "Rawhide," which aired from 1959 to 1965.

Aside from his music and acting career, Sheb Wooley was also a talented voice actor, lending his voice to various animated films and series.
