Shirley Ellis was an American soul singer and songwriter, best known for her 1964 hit song "The Name Game" and 1965 hit "The Clapping Song." Born on January 19, 1929, in New York City, Ellis started her music career as a songwriter for the Brill Building in the 1960s, penning songs for artists like The Chords and The Shirelles. She eventually signed with Congress Records and released her first solo album in 1963.


Ellis' unique vocal style and catchy songs made her a popular artist in the 1960s. "The Name Game" reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a classic party song. She continued to release music throughout the 1960s, with some of her other notable songs including "The Nitty Gritty" and "Soul Time."
