Shorty Long was an American soul singer and songwriter who gained fame in the 1960s. Born as Frederick Earl Long in Birmingham, Alabama in 1940, he started his music career at a young age, performing with local bands. Long signed with Motown Records in the early 1960s and released several singles that achieved moderate success on the R&B charts.
His biggest hit came in 1964 with the song "Devil with the Blue Dress On," which reached the top 5 on the R&B charts and top 40 on the pop charts. Long was known for his energetic and charismatic stage presence, as well as his distinctive soulful voice. Tragically, his promising music career was cut short when he died in a boating accident on the Detroit River in 1969 at the age of 29. Despite his untimely death, Shorty Long's music continues to be celebrated for its contributions to the Motown sound of the 1960s.
