Solomon Burke was an American singer, songwriter, and pioneer of soul music, born on March 21, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was known for his smooth, powerful voice and his ability to blend gospel, R&B, and country music influences in his songs. Burke recorded a string of hits in the 1960s, including "Cry to Me" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love."


In addition to his successful music career, Burke was also ordained as a bishop in the early 1970s and was known as the "King of Rock and Soul." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and continued to perform and record music until his death on October 10, 2010, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Throughout his career, Solomon Burke left a lasting impact on the music industry and is remembered as one of the greatest soul singers of all time.
