He was a pioneer of soul music and is best known for his smooth, powerful voice and heartfelt delivery. Burke began his music career in the 1950s and rose to fame in the 1960s with hits such as "Cry to Me" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love."
Burke was often referred to as the "King of Rock and Soul" and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Throughout his career, he released numerous albums and singles and continued to perform until his passing on October 10, 2010.
