Sonny James, born James Hugh Loden on May 1, 1929, was an American country music singer and songwriter. He was known for his smooth singing style and hit songs such as "Young Love" and "Running Bear." James was nicknamed the "Southern Gentleman" for his polished appearance and genteel manner.
James achieved a string of hit singles in the 1950s and 1960s and was one of the first country artists to have crossover success on the pop charts. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Sonny James passed away on February 22, 2016, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer in the country music industry.
