Spirit was an American rock band formed in 1967 in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup consisted of Randy California (guitar/vocals), Jay Ferguson (vocals/percussion), Mark Andes (bass), John Locke (keyboards), and Ed Cassidy (drums). The band is known for blending psychedelic rock with jazz and progressive rock elements, creating a unique sound that set them apart from their contemporaries.


Spirit achieved commercial success with their self-titled debut album in 1968, which featured their hit single "Mechanical World." They are also known for their critically acclaimed albums, including "The Family That Plays Together" and "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus." Despite undergoing several lineup changes over the years, Spirit continued to release music and tour until the early 2000s.
