His song "Different Strokes" became a hit in 1967, and he later found success with tracks like "Is It Because I'm Black" and "Take Me to the River." Johnson's music has been sampled by many hip-hop artists, including Kanye West, who famously sampled his song "Different Strokes" on the track "The Joy." Syl Johnson's contributions to music have solidified his legacy as a significant figure in the history of soul and funk music.
