The song was a major hit, reaching the top of the Billboard R&B Singles chart and peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Pillow Talk" was Sylvia's debut single as a solo artist, following her success as part of the duo Mickey & Sylvia.

Sylvia Robinson, born Sylvia Vanderpool, was an American singer, musician, and record producer. She was born on March 6, 1936, in New York City, and began her music career in the 1950s. In the early 1970s, Sylvia co-founded the record label All Platinum Records, where she discovered and produced acts like The Moments and Shirley & Company. In addition to her work as a producer, Sylvia had a successful solo career, with hits like "Pillow Talk" and "Sweet Stuff." She is often referred to as the "Mother of Hip Hop" for her role in producing the Sugarhill Gang's influential single "Rapper's Delight," which is considered one of the first commercially successful hip hop songs. Sylvia Robinson passed away on September 29, 2011, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in R&B and hip hop music.
