The band was formed in 1965 in California and was originally known as The Men. They changed their name to The Association upon signing with Valiant Records.

The band's lineup has changed over the years, but founding members Jules Alexander, Terry Kirkman, and Russ Giguere have been consistent members throughout most of the band's history. The Association's music is characterized by their lush harmonies and folk rock influences. They have released several albums over the years and their music continues to be celebrated for its nostalgic and melodic sound.
