The original lineup consisted of Sal Valentino, Ron Elliott, Ron Meagher, Declan Mulligan, and John Petersen. Their sound was characterized by folk-rock and jangle pop influences.

The Beau Brummels achieved commercial success with their debut single "Laugh, Laugh" in 1964, which reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. They followed up with hits like "Just a Little" and "You Tell Me Why." The band's unique sound and innovative approach to songwriting influenced many other bands of the era.
