The Blackbyrds were an American rhythm and blues and jazz-funk group formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973. They were a spin-off from The Jazz Crusaders, and were originally formed by jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. The group's music was a fusion of jazz, R&B, and funk, with a distinctive sound that featured tight horn arrangements and infectious grooves.
The Blackbyrds achieved commercial success in the 1970s with hits like "Walking In Rhythm" and "Rock Creek Park". Their self-titled debut album released in 1974 was a critical and commercial success, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard R&B chart. The group continued to release albums throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, blending elements of jazz and funk to create a unique sound that resonated with audiences.
