The Box Tops were an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967. The band's most famous lineup consisted of lead vocalist Alex Chilton, guitarist Gary Talley, bassist Bill Cunningham, drummer Danny Smythe, and keyboardist John Evans. They are best known for their hit single "The Letter," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967.
The Box Tops released several other successful singles in the late 1960s, including "Cry Like a Baby" and "Soul Deep." The band disbanded in 1970 but briefly reunited in the 1990s for a reunion tour. The Box Tops were inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2013, recognizing their contributions to the city's rich musical history.
