The Box Tops were an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967. The group achieved major success with their debut single "The Letter," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967. The song was written by Wayne Carson Thompson and became a signature hit for the band. The Box Tops were known for their blue-eyed soul sound, combining elements of rock, pop, and R&B.

Led by vocalist Alex Chilton, The Box Tops released several other hit singles including "Cry Like a Baby" and "Soul Deep." The band disbanded in 1970 but left a lasting impact on the music industry with their catchy tunes and soulful vocals. They were inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2016, recognizing their contributions to the city's rich musical heritage.
