The Chantels were an American girl group formed in the late 1950s in the Bronx, New York. They are considered one of the pioneering female vocal groups in the doo-wop genre. The original lineup consisted of Arlene Smith, Sonia Goring, Rene Minus, Jackie Landry Jackson, and Lois Harris. Their music was characterized by their sweet harmonies and emotional delivery, with hits like "Maybe" and "He's Gone" showcasing their vocal talents.


The Chantels were one of the first African-American girl groups to achieve mainstream success, paving the way for future female vocal groups in the music industry. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition of their contributions to the doo-wop genre. The Chantels' music continues to inspire and influence artists to this day.
