The Coasters were an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1955. The original members were Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Bobby Nunn, Leon Hughes, and Adolph Jacobs. The Coasters are best known for their humorous and catchy songs that often featured clever wordplay and storytelling lyrics. Some of their most popular hits include "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," and "Poison Ivy."
The Coasters were one of the first African-American groups to crossover to the pop charts during the 1950s and 1960s. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. The Coasters' music continues to be celebrated for its unique blend of doo-wop, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll influences.
