The group consisted of Jay "Bird" Uzzell as the lead singer, along with members James "Little Red" Bookman, James "Brother" Dunn, and Ray Grant. Known for their smooth harmonies and doo-wop style, The Corsairs achieved success with their hit song "Smoky Places" in 1961, which reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Corsairs Featuring Jay "Bird" Uzzell continued to record and perform throughout the 1960s, releasing several singles and albums. Although they did not achieve the same level of commercial success as their earlier hit, they remained popular among doo-wop and R&B music fans. The group's music has since been featured in various compilations and retrospectives, preserving their legacy as a notable presence in the doo-wop music scene.
